How to Measure Your Window Before Ordering Curtains

The most common problem customers face is an inaccurate measurement: a curtain that arrives smaller or larger than the window. The good news is that measuring is straightforward when you follow the right steps.
What you need
- A metal tape measure, which is more accurate than a fabric tape
- Paper and a pen
- A small stepladder if the window is high
First: choose the mounting position
Inside mount: the curtain sits inside the window recess. It looks clean and refined, but the recess must be deep enough.
Outside mount: the curtain is fixed to the wall around the window. It blocks light more effectively and can make the window appear larger.
Second: take the measurements
For an inside mount:
- Measure the width in three places: top, middle, and bottom.
- Use the smallest measurement.
- Measure the height in three places: right, centre, and left.
- Use the largest measurement.
For an outside mount:
- Measure the window width, then add 5–10 cm on each side for better light coverage.
- Measure from the point where the bracket will be fixed to the bottom of the window, adding the drop you prefer.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Relying on one measurement; walls and frames are not always perfectly square.
- Overlooking handles or obstructions around the frame.
- Forgetting to check recess depth for an inside mount.
- Rounding casually instead of writing the exact millimetre or centimetre measurement.
One final tip
Label every measurement with the room name and take a photo of the window. If you are still unsure, our team can help or visit the site before anything is made.
